Week 9: Voice and The Auteur Theory

For this weeks assignment, I decided to study the director Mira Nair. Mira Nair is and American filmmaker based in New York City.

The firm film I decided to watch was Queen of Katwe. This film was definitely a great inspirational story. As a viewer, we can see how Mira got to know the culture in this story and the humbling story of a girl struggling in poverty in her time. Seeing the progression of her life experience in finding her passion for chess, the people she meets and interacts with along the way, and the struggles she goes through is really well played.

The second film I watched was Amelia. This film is about the life of Amelia Earhart, the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Like the above movie, I admire how director Mira Nair humbly dives in to get to know the main character in her films, highlighting and honoring the accomplishment they have made. From this movie, I believe we get a well taste of Amelia's life and aspects of what she went through in a great inspirational way. From elements such as costume design, we can get a good feel for the time of era, making the audience connect more with the place in time of this story.

Overall, from studying her films, Mira Nair's work shows how her personality ( her voice ) draws close to inspiring others to humbly get to know other peoples stories, honoring and learning from their experiences. This, as well as her interests in exploring other cultures, I believe.
