Week 9: Voice and The Auteur Theory

For this weeks assignment, I decided to study the director Mira Nair. Mira Nair is and American filmmaker based in New York City. The firm film I decided to watch was Queen of Katwe. This film was definitely a great inspirational story. As a viewer, we can see how Mira got to know the culture in this story and the humbling story of a girl struggling in poverty in her time. Seeing the progression of her life experience in finding her passion for chess, the people she meets and interacts with along the way, and the struggles she goes through is really well played. The second film I watched was Amelia. This film is about the life of Amelia Earhart, the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Like the above movie, I admire how director Mira Nair humbly dives in to get to know the main character in her films, highlighting and honoring the accomplishment they have made. From this movie, I believe we get a well taste of Amelia's life and aspects of what she went th...

Week 5: Cosmopolis by Don DeLilo

In reading the novel Cosmopolis I definitely wasn't engaged or interested as with a novel such as True Grit. While I do think through learning about the main character Eric and how he chooses to live his life, shows us how going after the pleasures of this life, (chasing after the wind) only leads to more emptiness and an unfulfilled lifestyle. Which is a very important topic think on. I do think many people including myself, can relate to Eric, the main character. I think we can choose to learn from this topic to fight against our fleshly nature to chase after meaningless things in life, knowing that it only leads to destruction. It's then where we can find peace.

Week 4: The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill LePore

My first impressions of wonder woman were of a brave woman, fighting for woman's rights. Which I think many females can relate to and become inspired by. Learning about the creator of wonder woman, William Moulton Marston, I wouldn't say I'd be as interested in his comics. With understanding the facts of how this character came to be though his life, is definitely not the way I think a character or story should be made.

Week 3: True Grit: Charles Portis

For this weeks book read, I thought this novel was definitely an adventure. It was interesting to see the American mythology in this novel and how numerous things how changed over the years. From the first bit of the story hearing Maddie's back story, really getting to know her throughout the story kept that engaging factor. Getting to know Maddie as well as the other main characters was very nice because I know readers can for sure relate to these characters, which I think the author did an amazing job in doing. For example, I loved Maddie's pure, driven, adventurous personalty traits. In reading this novel readers can definitely enjoy and feel as if they are going on this journey with Maddie and other characters. Also, as the story goes on, it is very nice to see how the character learn and grow on the way. Seeing how Maddie and Reuben interact and relate to one another personality was very interesting.Learning from each others character and experiences is a good take away fr...

Week 2: Pride and Prejudice, the novel written by Jane Austen

The novel Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen was a very interesting, fun read. In connection to the novel and film I found it very nice to see how everything came to life. What I think really highlights this novel is the characters. It is interesting to see how certain characters react and in getting to know them more. Such as the two main characters, Darcy and Elizabeth. It was nice to see how through all their struggles in the end they were able to come back in relationship. What I found also engaging is getting to know how marriages and relationships were like in this day in age.

Prologue

Hello! My name is Kayla Irizarry and I am currently a fourth year illustration student. Like many of us I grew up really enjoying novels along with movies such as Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia, to name a few. I do find it very interesting and inspiring to see how wonderful books such as these come to life on the screen. With this course (Literature and Media Studies), I am exited to explore new novels and to learn from other students perspectives.

Week 1: The Wife of Bath's Prologue and The Wife of Bath's Tale

In this Prologue and story we learn about a woman, her life as a wife , along with her views on subjects such as marriage. Going into the tale we read about a knight and his experiences and he try's to learn what woman want in marriage. In both The Wife of Bath's Prologue  and  The Wife of Bath's Tale although I do not agree are like parts or subjects of this readings particularly I did think this read was interesting to read and know what went on in this period of time. I do believe in relationships, there should be unity with one another, to truly love and serve one another. In comparing certain subjects that came from this reading, such as how woman are being viewed and comparing them from how things are today, it is very interesting to see things have improved and shifted in certain subjects. I think one positive thing readers can take from this reading, is thinking about this subject or how woman are treated with much more respect and freedom from the earlier times ...
